Alcohol and Marijuana
Abuse
Drugs and alcohol come in many
different forms and can initiate a variety of
symptoms and effects on the body. In general,
people who begin to experiment with drugs and
alcohol usually start with the ‘softer’
drugs such as alcohol and marijuana. The effects
of alcohol and marijuana include feelings of
euphoria, loss of reasoning and a feeling of
indestructibility. Long-term symptoms of alcohol
abuse include consistent blackouts (memory loss
while drunk), loss of control, inappropriate,
violent and unhealthy behaviors, etc. Close
friends and family members often confront those
who have a problem with alcohol. However, it
may take months, or even years before the alcoholic
believes there is a problem. Marijuana can cause
long-term effects such as memory loss and apathy.
While marijuana is not considered “that
detrimental”, it is truly the gateway
drug leading to harder drug use and experimentation.
What may have been experimenting in the beginning
could quickly turn into uncontrollable addiction.
Uppers and Downers
Uppers are commonly referred to
as stimulants. They speed up bodily functions,
including blood pressure, breathing, and heart
rate. Side effects such as dizziness, decreased
appetite, change in sleeping patterns and loss
reasoning are all possible. Uppers include drugs
such as cocaine, crack, methamphetamines, diet
pills, and amphetamines. Once a person becomes
addicted to these drugs it’s extremely
difficult to stop without some type of treatment
program.
Downers include drugs such as
opiates, heroin, sedatives and alcohol. While
alcohol is considered a drug in its own class,
it does have the effects of a “downer”.
People who use these types of drugs will often
experience symptoms such as impaired judgment,
impaired functioning, problems with motor skills
and apathy. Persons who become addicted to these
substances often have a hard time quitting because
of the addictive and appealing nature of the
drugs. In any case, to attain permanent sobriety
or abstinence from these substances, drug and/or
alcohol treatment is a desirable course of action.
