Once the cycle of addition has
gone too far and the only positive course of
action is treatment, here are a few good measures
in substance abuse recovery:
Intervention
If a person is unwilling to seek
help for themselves, hiring an intervention
specialist to break through denial is a smart
idea. During the intervention process, family
and friends work together with the interventionist
to confront a destructive drug addict or alcoholic.
Through this process, the substance abuser is
most often able to accept that there is a problem
and get help.
Rehabilitation Center/Treatment
Center
After a person becomes willing
to get treatment there are a variety of different
options available. It is most important that
a person chooses the best type treatment for
their situation. Those experiencing substance
abuse may choose a drug rehabilitation facility,
a drug treatment center, or a drug abuse center.
Those struggling with alcohol abuse may find
programs such as, alcohol rehabilitation or
an alcohol treatment facility more useful. Drug
and alcohol treatment programs also range in
length, philosophy and type. For some people,
the stricter the program, the better. However,
others are in need of a less intrusive plan,
in which case there’s outpatient treatment.
The main difference between outpatient
and inpatient treatment is that inpatient treatment
requires the person to live at the facility
and outpatient does not. Further, inpatient
treatment is ideal for early recovery because
it removes the drug addict or alcoholic from
their unhealthy social environment. Both inpatient
and outpatient treatment focuses on the needs
of the ex-substance abuser and strives to give
them tools to combat relapse and other old behaviors.
Individual counseling, group therapy, alternative
and spiritual activities can be combined to
create the most effective treatment program
possible.
Aftercare/Sober Living
After the rehabilitation process
has been completed, many people do not feel
that they can handle the trials of everyday
life while at the same time trying to stay committed
to recovery. For this reason, sober living facilities
are available to help in the transition from
rehabilitation back to normal life. Sober living
is an environment in which no one drinks or
uses drugs and everyone is held accountable
for their own behavior. Skills learned in sober
living are often enough to last a lifetime.
